I read where he only got a little over 23% of the votes for the Hall the first go around. I was a little surprised by that low number.

Unfortunately Mark McGuire will probably not make the hall of fame anytime soon. Maybe never. Unfortunately there are a couple of things that affect this. Does he belong in the hall? Your darn right he does.

1. To many voters for the hall are looking at what he did at the congressional hearings - which has nothing to do with what was done on the field.
2. Creatin (sp) was actually found in his locker years ago. It's an over the counter substance, but it is a steriod. Which was not banned by baseball back then.
3. The Hall of Fame voters cannot make up their mind on anything. When only one player is getting voted in per year how the hell is anyone going to get in.

Baseball is a mess. Bonds will get in (despite all the drug issues). Sammy Sosa will not get in despite breaking 600 home runs, and never being involved in the steriod cases) Craig Biggio might get in despite having a wonderful baseball career and breaking the 3000 hit mark.

If you smooth out the steroid induced speed-bump Mark McGwire & Reggie Jackson have fairly similar stats .Both had an abysmally low career BA's Mac's .263 & Jax .262
The reason that Reggie is in the Hall of Fame and McGwire is not going to make it is because under playoff pressure Reggie performed and McGwire did not.
Sometimes baseball is just a kid's game with" Put up or shut up " rules

capital em, see, capital jee, DOUBLE YOU, eye, ar, ee.

Note: double you. Not single you. McGwire.

Should he be in? I think so.

Will he? Don't know; his 2007 ballot return was doomed, that was a foregone conclusion. But we don't know if the writers were imposing a one-year embargo or if they really will hold the line. So the 2008 voting will reveal much more.

He did himself no favors with his 2005 Congressional testimony, but I believe in the Fifth Amendment and therefore do not include that in my evaluations.

What McGwire acknowledged using in 1998, when he hit a then-record 70 home runs, was androstenedione. He then hit 65 HR in 1999 without using andro. There are several conclusions that could be (shakily) drawn from this, but most writers jump directly to the most foolish and vindictive ones, that being the going thing in journamalism in these dark times.

If we need to bring back anything, we need to bring back competent reporters who knew how to maintain impartiality.

No, Mark McQuire will never make the Hall of Fame. Two undistinguished years of triple-A ball just don't cut it.

Now Mark McGuire's another story. I personally think he was on 'roids. Until / unless he is officially found guilty, though, he needs to be given the benefit of the doubt. (Even if the doubt appears to be big.) Our country's founding principles of justice demand that much. (Now whether he'll be afforded that is anyone's guess.)

No. How could you be surprised? Here is a man who used steroids and various other banned substances for all but two years of his career. His entire career is all but a lie.

Why should a man of the caliber be placed along side with great players worthy of the hall?

of course he should be in the hall , this is a good example of why baseball writers should be removed from this responsibility , baseball should appoint a comity maybe of former players , or true baseball intellects , to me as a person who loves this game with my entire being , it is an outrage that it is left up to these reporters, who many carry personal grudges against these players, not to mention hold standards of living higher for these players , than they do for themselves. true fans should be outraged. why isn't Pete Rose in the hall , why isn't the greatness of Josh Gibson , the true home run king, known to Americans? what about Buck O'Neil , i could go on for days. this systems needs change, stop the maddness in baseball, before these people who try to direct our feelings , ruin our game!!!!!!!!!!!!!

its going to be tough for him to get the votes he need mainly because of his negative response he gave in front of congress hearing..and he made the bad judgment in my view...just come out clean, admit it and apologize...that is the formula he should have taken, because there are lot of loyal baseball fans, McGwire fans who will forgive him if only he confess his wrong doing, his mistake and we as Americans are for the most part forgiving people...but watching him spew diarrhea coming out of his mouth by saying something like i am not here to talk about my past business ...my goodness, what a fill in the blank if you will he was...
