I want to plant something tall between my patio and fence. There is only about 2 feet between the two. I have a wood fence, and I am hoping to soften it with some plantings. The ground is shady, because of the fence, but sunny of course higher up on the fence. Any ideas for me???? thanks

Landscaping small spaces is fun! I like small ornamental grasses (like the perennial evergreen monkey grass, which doesn't care if it's in shade or sun) and small boulders for contrast. You can even add, if you have an outdoor outlet, a small water feature like a fountain to make this area more attractive and interesting. If you don't want the expense of a water feature, a tall hook with a hanging basket will draw your eye upwards and make the area seem much larger. All the above will make sitting on your patio a pleasant experience.

plant a bradford pear if you want the patio to be under the shade of a tree. Municipalaties plant Bradford pears between the curb and sidewalk because the roots go deep and do not disturb the sidewalks or street , so your patio will not crack from the roots. If you want to keep the patio sunny, mabe some tall ornimental grass.... or a flowering vine on the fence like Clematis... the plant likes sun and the roots like to be in the shade. and mabe some Dwarf Alberta spruce and Hostas. Dwarf Alberta spruce only gets to be between 4 and 6 feet tall, and it takes a while for that...But looks good...... good luck with whatever you decide.
