Mount Vesuvius is a Back Arc Volcano resulting from the subduction of the European Craton underneath the African Craton. As a result of this subduction the African Craton is bend downward south of the Alps, exposing part of the craton to increased temperature and pressure. When pressure is released by sudden movement (an earthquake), a melt is produced creating a volcanic eruption. The only reason the Italian Peninsula is above sea level is due to the Apennines Mountain chain. Earthquakes are not always associated with faults. In this case earthquakes are associated with a convergent plate boundary.

Umm...I wasn't aware that there was any tectonic movement when Mount Vesuvius erupted. There was a release of molten rock from vents under the volcano which caused large pyroclastic flows, tidal waves, and many other effects, but I don't recall every hearing about any tectonic plate movement associated with the eruption.

There was no tectonic movement when Mt Vesuvius erupted, unless it was coincidental. There were earthquakes that occurred due to the release of pressure. But that didn't move the tectonic plates.

Mt Vesuvius is a stratovolcano that is probably the RESULT of convergent plate boundaries, the collision b/w Europe & Africa. A subduction zone was created when the African plate slid under the European plate.
Another possibility could be that it's the result of divergent plate boundaries r/t the opening of the Tyrhhenian Sea (part of the Mediterranean) off the western coast of Italy.
