I have been to The Mars Society website and they sound like a bunch of dreamers, do you think that there research will make any difference for a mission to Mars.

I think a Mars mission isn't going to happen.

A Mars mission will happen some day. It may not be a day any time soon, but some day. And before the missions do happen, there will have to be some kind of practice done. But I agree, now is too soon. But hey, those people are enjoying themselves doing what they like, just like artists or athletes, and their work is every bit as valuable as a painting or a football game, so I say they have every right to do what they are doing.

Just because the results of research is not used at once does not mean it is invalid. If you looked a little more carefully at the whole of th Mars Society material you may find that it is nowhere near as pie in the sky as some might think.

As I understand it they reject the idea of a "Starship Enterprise" type vehicle and suggest a few launches of unmanned supply craft to be followed by a manned vehicle once it is known the supply stuff has arrived safely. I'd be prepared to donate a wheelbarrow and a can of beans to that.

Probably not in your lifetime, but some day why wouldn't there be one? The preparation has to start somewhere.
