I think it depends which end of the market you are looking at. We have a Skoda Fabia which is an amazing car.
I would say that if you are looking at spending £12k for a car get a skoda as you will get loads of car for the money but if you are spending £20k get an Audi as the image means it will hold its value better. I would not get a top of the range Skoda Superb with a V6 engine for example as it will plummet in value

Well isn't CowboyC full of one sided bias and ignorance - cant spell Czech either? If he actually cared to do a little research he would see that the history of Skoda is one of the longest in the world (3rd oldest car maker I believe) - made vehicles for heads of state, crown princes, dignitaries and so on. Have a long and succesful sport division, survived under political conditions that many other firms stagnated and died from. Skoda Auto need to justify their existence, expertise or pedigree to no one and the blind stupidity towards the brand is more or less uniquely a British trait.
A car cannot be communist by the way and that comment alone shows a complete ignorance of so many things on so many levels, that it beggars belief.
As for the Audi, VW, Skoda and Seat debate - today this is about 80% a marketing exercise. If you want to pay for a badge and worry what the people at the golf club think - buy the Audi. If you have more brain than money buy the Skoda - a vehicle that is every bit as good and use what is left over for a few golf holidays to the Algarve.

They share many component parts, Audi does have a more upmarket interior, however, the Skoda factory in Mlada Boleslav is state of the art, the workers are very motivated, skilled Czechs. Audis are assembled with, at least in part, migrant workers from Turkey. The reliability surveys bear this out, Skoda seems to be able to put together a better car than Audi or VW.

There are other differences.
The quality of the materials used for the interior finish is much higher in an Audi - its not bad in a Skoda, but Audi interiors have better materials than practically any other mainstream brand.
Also the upper-range versions of Audis tend to have more powerful engines (e.g a 3.2 v6 in the A3), and the Audi suspension tends to be tuned for a more sporty ride, while Skodas are tuned for a more comfortable ride.
However, you do have to pay a premium for the Audi badge.

There is an enourmous difference! Except for the cars that are copies of Audis. The majority of Audis were made many years ago. That logo represents the Auto union corporation, Germany's equivalent to General Motors. the 4 rings are for 4 wheels representing Horch, Audi, DKW, + Wanderer the 4 automakers who merged to form a great corporation that dominated Grand Prix racing in the late 30s. The name Audi and the trademark are about all that is left of that conglomerate now, well that and Audi's long and distinguished history of engineering excellence. Volkswagen bought Audi, it was volkswagen who made copies of Audis and put VW trademarks on them, not the other way around. Skoda is a Czeck company that may have a history, but they made cheap communist cars, so nobody cares. What happened to VW happened to Skoda.

Don't know about Audi, but the Skoda versions of the Volkswagen models have the reputation of being better built. Engines for some of these vehicles might be built anywhere, the transmissions somewhere else and the whole shebang comes together in one factory. I hear that a lot of Mercedes-Benz engines have been made in Holland.
