I know they have adaptors, but I would rather not have to go out and buy one after buying a new computer...

It depends whether it comes with both types of interface.

You could buy an external PATA harddrive case and plug your old harddrive into a USB port.

Depends on the motherboard inside the new computer. But you can safely assume that there is still an IDE port on the new system.

Most new motherboards still have at least one ide channel. You should be ok, but you will probably have to have the hard drive on the same cable as the cd-drive.

Take a look at the motherboard. It may also accept an EIDE as many do.

You should state the model of the motherboard. BUT, most have at least one IDE connector. I don't think they are all SATA just yet.

Most of the new motherboards will operate both IDE and SATA drives. Check your new machine to be certain! Best to you. ;-)=
