When you go to the petrol station, you get a choice of normal unleaded and 'superior' unleaded. The 'superior' unleaded costs more but is supposed to be more fuel efficient. So if the 'superior' unleaded is more fuel efficient does it cost less 'per mile'?

I had a 180sx and it wouldnt even run on normal unleaded.
This is the same with my car atm it has to run on Higher ron Petrol.
It is best and safer to use higher octane fuel on performance cars.Even more so for me,as mine is a Japanese import and the ron is higher in Japan but close to our super unleaded.

This is real easy to find out. The most efficient fuel you can use is the lower octane. The problem it that if you have a high compression motor (9.5/1 or higher) You may experience spark knock or pre-detonation. This is when the fuel lights under compression instead of waiting for the spark. If you hear a "rattle" when you give your car the gas, although NOT more efficient, you will need to use the higher octane to prevent engine damage. In some of the newer autos they have a knock sensor that will retard the timing of the engine to eliminate the spark knock thus making it use more fuel per mile traveled. If you are unsure about this the best way to know for sure is to keep record of the money you spend to travel say 200 miles on one fuel then do the same for the other fuel. If you need help on how to figure this contact me and I will explain how.

Go and drive the pair of them. The diesel will thrash the petrol in every respect both on performance and fuel economy. The petrol engine is way too small for a car as big and heavy as the A4.

Superior/super unleaded is higher octane than standard petrol.

This allows the cars engine management to advance the ignition timing further compared to when running on lower octane standard petrol. This advanced ignition running is more fuel efficient and the engine can develop more power.

In theory at least you should get more milage out of super unleaded but since most people who use it like to take adantage of that slight increase in perfomance the benefits are lost.

super unleaded is the best fuel to use. probably cost the same per mile.youre car will just run better with it.its better in faster cars its the only thing i used to put in my old subaru impreza.

The high octane has more additives in it and costs more to produce. It is for use in high compression engines, using it in the average car is a waste of money.

It has nothing to do with efficiency.

You should instead consider the fuel efficiency of your car's engine.

the superior is great!!! i pay about 1.06 per litre but my car runs a hell of a lot better better responce better performance. run your tank right down then put about a tenners worth in your tank and try it for a while. if you like it then use that from now on.

Its all the same stuff.

They just try to make a few extra quid out of anyone gullible enough to believe that if its more expensive it must be different and better.
