Yes there was a family murdered there. As for the movies and what they portrayed, they have already said it was a hoax.
I do believe that there is something in that house that is paranormal but to what extent I don't know if we will ever know the full truth of what really happened in that house the night 5 people lost their lives or just how gruesome it really was. I can only imagine what the inside looked like the day the police first went in.
The first movie we were led to believe was the truth turned out to be a Hollywood money maker and a hoax.

I love how people are still arguing this even though the both George and Kathy Lutz are dead and not here to defend themselves.
I think (and I've always thought) that something strange did happen to them. There was no way they would have had the foresight to know that their story would create such a uproar. Their son, Chris, contends that he saw strange things in the house -- and this is after a law suit against his adoptive father, George Lutz, for fabricating so much of the story.
For the record, the current owners have lived in the house for quite some time now. There have been no reports of supernatural activity. In fact, from what I've seen in pictures, the house looks great.
For the person above who claims that she refused to go to the house on a guided tour -- she's a BIG FAT LIAR. There are no guided tours into this house. It's a private residence and the world would be ever so much better if rubberneckers such as herself would stop gawking and invading privacy.
Both movies were works of Hollywood. The second movie was an abomination and the writers should be strung up and flogged. Pathetic, pathetic, pathetic.
In regards to the murders: Ron Jr. shot his mom and dad, his two sisters and his two brothers. His story changes daily....he's insane.
IF there was ever a haunting in the house I think it would have been more of a residual haunting -- a memory of what happened there. I also think that some people are haunted rather than places. If a person is haunted, the haunting will follow them throughout life and according to George, it did follow them.
No one is ever going to know what really happened. I think people should just let it go.

The murders of the DeFeo family did happen at the house, but like a lot of unexplained events, the haunting caused a lot of controversy and even law suits. It is still unproven to this day whether the events (para-normal) really happened or not.I Think there were some weired things going on but we will probably never know the truth

I don't know, I believe the people that say that is not haunted. But I saw an interview in the History channel, George Lutz and Kathleen did not seem to be lying either. (In fact Kathleen was already sick when this interview was done) I think she died in 2001 and George died in 2006 of heart disease. And they maintained to their dying day that it did happened. I don't know about anybody else, but I can't keep a lie for that long. So maybe something did happen. Forget the movie it's just Hollywood, but a total of six people died in that house

Being it was only one family that was reported as experiencing paranormal happenings, I would have to think that it wasn't the house that was haunt, but the family. If in fact it was true. I personal think that Ronald Defoe, Jr (the murderer) was possessed, in which he was driven by this evil to commit such a horrible act. If you read up on possession you will find that it can also have the same effects as a poltergeist or malevolent type haunting.

Actually, I do believe in the ghosts, but in the Amityville case I think it was just these people getting in over their heads financially. When they heard that the house had been the scene of the DeFeo murders, they used that to get out. Just my opinion, though!

There may be 'spirits' in the Amityville house, what with the murders that went on. But my mum told me about a documentary about the DeFeo's murder and apparently, the son (who commited the murder) was on drugs, which probably made him think he was hearing voices. So that part about him hearing voices may be untrue, but maybe his and his family's spirit is still there.
