If the celsius temperature is - 40° find the fahreheit temperature.
Fahrenheit formula
F = 9/5(C) + 32
Insert - 40 into the formula
F = 9/5(- 40) + 32
F = - 360/5 + 32
F = - 72 + 32
F = - 40°
- 40° Celsius equals - 40° fahrenheit
- - - - - - - - - - - - -
Fahrenheit temlperature is 77° find the celsius temperature
Celsius Formula
C = 5/9(F - 32)
Insert 77 into the formula
C = 5/9(77 - 32)
C = 5/9(45)
C = 225/9
C = 25°
77°fahrenheit equals 25° celsius
- - - - - - - - -
Converting fahrenheit to celsius formula
F = 9/5(C) + 32
Multiply both sides of the equation by its reciprocal
5/9F = (5/9)9/5)C + 32
5/9F = C + 32
Transpose 32
5/9(F - 32) = C + 32 - 32
5/9(F - 32) = C
- - - - - - - s-

Because we have 250 years of using the Farenheit scale. Everybody knows intuitively what 70F feels like, or what 100F or 20F feels like. A few years ago, they tried to coax Americans into the Celsius system. Some weather reports started listing Celsius temps first, followed by Farenheit temps. Everyone hated it. When Americans hear it's going to be 20 degrees out, they bundle up for a freezing cold day, not a nice temperate spring day. Since we are a large, relatively isolated country, there is little desire to conform to the international standards. And no, that's not really elitist, it's just a reality. In Europe and Asia, people have much more contact with the international community because it's usually not that far away. All of Europe is about the same size as the United States, so we here in the US have relatively little contact with the international community on a daily basis, so the average Joe has little reason to want to conform to any international standards. The bottom line: no one here wants to change what we've always known.

I happen to know that off the top of my head, but here is how you calculate it. The formula to convert Celcius, C, to Fahrenheit, F, is F = 1.8C + 32. If F = C, then C = 1.8C + 32 ==> -0.8C = 32 ==> C = -32/0.8 = -40.
So -40 °C and -40 °F are the same temperature.
