Do you wash tins of food before you open them?
I do. If you think about it, when you take the lid off it most times falls in the food.
Just where has that lid been? Sat on a dusty shelf in the store, sometimes near the floor.
How many times have other shoppers picked it up to read the label? Did they wash their hand the last ime they visited the loo/john/dunny?
How many people have sneezed on it? Germs travel a long way from a sneeze.
Hope that has given you all something to think about while I go out for the rest of the day. lol x

Akshata. I am not obsessed with hygiene and if I did goolge this question I wouldn't be interacting with other people and that is why I joined ya in the first place. x

Dolly k Of course you won't upset me, I have a sense of humour. The negative comments don't upset me either, I just like to state my point of view, whether any one listens is another story!! lol x

Karen. I'm not a strange lady although if I was pregnant I would be unique at my age!! lol. That comment was my attempt at sarcasm( never was my thing) I was meaning that I thought my q was a change from the amount of times that people ask " Could I be pregnant?" x

Sweetpea, as you can read above. I won't be needing to worry about my baby catching any germs. lol x

Kaygee, I don't understand why you feel I am being patronising. I just like to enter into the spirit of things, and I did not consider my thoughts to be unnecessary either, we are all entitled to our own opinions though so I respect yours even if I do disagree with it.. Thank you. x

Well I never thought about that Sylvia and think it's a very good point.
In fact the next time I toddle down to Tescos with my shopping trolley I'm going to make sure I'm fully protected in my all-enclosing chemical suit and stand-alone oxygen supply.
I might look like I dropped in from some other planet and scare the children, but I will be safe from them thar pesky germ critters you're rightly concerned about and that are trying to take over the world ..!!

I had never thought of that Sylvia. Damn good point. I would never eat nuts or crisps off a bar because you don't know how many people have been to the loo and not washed their hands!
You cannot be too careful these days and, who knows, those odd days off sick ( when you really are sick) could be caused by germs on Supermarket goods. I am certainly going to be doing this from now on, washing the cans etc.
I hope you had a lovely day out lolx

You've a good point there. Since I've been working with the Police I've become a lot more concerned about hygene... dealing with some of the unsavory types one starts to worry about what he will take home to the wife and grandkids.
Also after dealing with the family of a patient (at the hospital where I volunteer as on call Chaplain) who had contracted necrotizing fasciitis and learning how easy it is to contract such diseases I have learned to carry a small vial of hand sanitizer in my pocket at all times.

I have a little sign which says 'My kitchen is Clean Enough to be Healthy and Dirty Enough to be Happy in'. Yes, 'clean enough' includes washing the lids on tins and jars as well as fruit, vegetables and hands.

Although we may not mean to spread germs when we go shopping, how many gates, doors, handrails and trolley handles do we touch on the way to the shelves?

I have been a SC for six and a half years and in all that time have not used a single tin; packets, wrapped, boxed and frozen food but never tinned. None of my friends of similar, or greater age use tins and have not done so for years.

Thanks for the advice, even though it is patronising and unnecessary.

I wash everything.... the can tops, the 'already washed' produce, the skins of fruit that I will only cut through to get to the inside [citrus, etc.].
Some may see this as OCD, but I have a problem with eating others 'leftovers'. After all, where exactly have those hands been?

i think you may have a point. if we stopped and worried about everything we did we would never eat or drink. some germs are healthy for us. when my two children were born they had immune defiencies which mean't they were prone to every kind of infection. my hubby and i become obsessed with cleaning and especially anything they put in their mouths toys or food. doctors told us we were doing them more harm than good. to become immune to bugs they have to have it at least once. there are alot of dirty people out there who are not too careful in what they do, but they seem to live long lives. watch it though as when baby is born you may well end up obsessive too!

I do...I wash off everything...cans, jars, soda cans/bottles. I've been doing that for years. I also sqwish/collapse anything cardboard...cereal boxes, milk cartons, anything sqwishable for recycling. It saves so much space and you can double the quantity in a single bag. I also wash anything that can be recycled...cottage cheese cartons, tuna cans, pets food cans, bottles. Most things are recyclable if you can't eat it, so I have very little "Garbage" but lots of recycleables.Maybe this is weird, but I've been doing these things for so many years I feel guilty if I don't.

Yes, I wash the lids of cans before I open them. Yes, I always wash my hands after using the rest room. As well as washing them before I cook, before I eat, whenever.

I was a nurse at one point in my life, and was taught the importance of clean hands, clean food.
