A correct status symbol is very important. Although I personally think Mercedes are nicer, they are owned by practically anyone, so for the status, certainly pick a Lexus. Lexus LS460

is my favorite.

Personally I would have a Lexus. Mercs are lovely cars and more of a "status symbol" but the Lexus just says: "I`m not a brash bastard, but if you know what I know I have a better car". They are a better car too (yes, really) Mercs have been blighted with reliability problems recently. A friend of mine took delivery of a brand new Mercedes CLS350 and it broke down 4 hours after he took delivery. His words to me at the time?: "I almost wish I ordered the LS460 after all".

Strictly adhering to the scope of your question without adding a vehicle outside of your list.
Mercedes still carries the connotation of "Status" more than a Lexus, although, that doesn't mean that they are better cars.
The German luxury vehicles have been around much longer and therefore "carry more weight" when trying to portrait status.
However, the Japanese cars tend to be more durably built.

Since I picked Mercedes I'll go with the 2007 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E550.

Mercedes
Lexus cars seem so bland to me. Plus Mercedes has an interesting heritage, Lexus was just created by Toyota so they could have a luxury segment.
Other brands, other then Mercedes, that interest me is Cadillac and BMW.

Mercedes for sure. It has a long histroy of being luxurious and exhilarating brand. Out of the new models, the CLS and the SL are by far the best looking and the most fun to drive.

Out of the two choices I'd go for a Mercedes CLS 63 AMG. But if I had a wider choice I'd go for a Range Rover.

Merc all the way. been a classic marque for years compared with the souped up Toyota that is Lexus.
If you want super status then you need to go top end and I would say that a CLS 63 AMG would hit the spot nicely :)
But then again .. if you are going for ULTIMATE status you really want to be buying a Maybach 62.

Neither has the image of a status I would be comfortable with.
Some brands have more appeal than these to me, for example:
Renault - distinctive French style with high technology content
Ford (of Europe) - high quality, excellent driving characteristics
Skoda - an intelligent choice - all the car you need and more, but for a value price.
