I really dont see the connection. No, reality shows are not deemed to be intelectual viewing or there to take the place of the 'Open University' but it can still be entertaining.
I am not going to argue the pro's and con's of reality tv but, suffice to say, One can enjoy the programmes without turning into a brain dead moron.
I am an intelligent women, articulate and able to hold a converstion or debate about most issues yet I still enjoy Big Brother. Sometimes its good not to have to work at being entertained, sometimes its good just to sit....and be entertained!
And who gives anyone the right to judge anyway?

Burning brightly, I am not judging anyone, I am making statements about SOME people on here, who, from experience, I have seen are all too quick to judge others for watching a particular tv programme. I dont care what anyone watches.

Francophile...You seem to forget that bears dont apply to bear bait! The BB contestants do, and they know exactly what they are going to have to go through to have their 15 minutes of fame. You cant compare the two

I completely agree with you. A lot of people are unable to tell between the right to have an opinion and forcing their views on people. It would be a boring world if everybody all liked the same things.

I think there is a lot to be learnt from watching Big Brother. We are all guilty of making decisions about people based on first impressions and the fanscinating thing about BB is that the people we thought we knew on day 1 are actually completely different several weeks later.
Charley is a typical example, she now appears to have calmed down a lot and we are now begining to see another side to her. Lets face it she can't be that bad or she would have been put up by the other housemates weeks ago.
Whereas Laura who we all thought was bubbly has shown that she lacks any motivation and is content to lie around in her dressing gown all day.
I also consider myself an intelligent person and i try to watch it whenever I can. I think this year has been quite good so far, although I think the tasks could be a bit more challenging both physically and mentally.

You are quite right Susie. Maybe they are the unintelligent ones because they cannot see the value in studying other people and their behaviour, or the need to keep a balance in life by watching something that doesn't tax the brain too hard - it's called relaxing and relieving stress. The big question is why do they have to answer, judge and criticise BB answers/questions if they are not interested in the programme? They obviously have sad lives themselves! Like you I am an intelligent person (hope so!), I have a Degree but I love watching BB.

I totally agree. Reality Television is first most a form of entertainment, yes some people won't like it but most of us do, because it becomes compulsive viewing, very addictive and I suppose as shows like Big Brother show everyday people (and some wacky ones too!) instead of some kind of glossy drama or over hyped, exaggerated soap opera, ie. you can relate to people and the situations they are in more easily.
A lot or people will know, will tell you 'I don't watch Big Brother...' as if they are superior than you in intelligence, yet secretly catch the odd show, here in there and know exactly what is going on! It's only light entertainment on TV and shouldn't be taken so seriously.

i love big brother sadly have been able to watch the last three series ,i am reasonably intelligent "have a life " mum of two with a rewarding job ,and at the end of a hard day at work there is nothing better than to watch a lighthearted programme that is highly entertaining , i am interested in people and how they interact together, for everyone who says they hate it and it should be axed there are a million more who love it .also if they hate the programme so much why do they answer the questions on it there are plenty more choices on offer ,we as a british public are still allowed some choice in what we allowed to do in our free time so if we want to watch it 24/7 its up to us long may bb reign

Despite that fact that I do watch too much tv, I consider myself to be an inteligent person. As part of my job, I work I work with some exceptionally intelligent people, some of whom are Psychologists, some are Psychiatrists. While you might then use the argument that they watch it as part of their job, they would argue that they just like watching it!
Big Brother always manages to promote positive debate about something, often leading to people "in the real world" to think about how they act. Without wanting to start a debate about racism, I would hope that people have learnt that the use of some words is totally inexcusable.
Often the people who judge big brother are the ones who have either never seen it, or use the argument "well i watched 15 minutes of it, and was bored to tears".

Burning brightly is an asolute @**hole, and the reason he took this question so badly is because he IS one of ''those people'' that come on here and answer all BB questions by saying that anyone who watches is an idiot/has no life etc....
******s like him think that by pretending that they don't watch it ... it somehow make them cooler or more intelligent than people who do...
but how do they know its rubbish if they don't watch..?
I think that some people think its ''in vogue'' to dislike BB and look down on people who do ... when THEY actually are the sheep!!!
..and judging by most of their answers ... and what I have seen of you ....you are definitely more intelligent...
they were probably bullies at school too!!
dR bad

Yes, there are people who look down their nose at those of us who enjoy Reality TV. They just want to feel superior and intellectual. Which proves in itself who the real idiots are.
Secondly, it's pure entertainment. Watching these people who are desperate to be famous, lose their minds is quite hilarious. They put themselves up for it - so I see no reason why we should feel bad watching it.
I think the social dynamic of the Big Brother house would be the most interesting experiment to be in control of. Picking the types of characters and assessing how these characters react with one another under set circumstances.
Fascinating!

I couldn't agree more with what your saying. I believe that people that watch reality tv (I am one of these people & proud of it!) are more in touch with behaviours of people. I enjoy watching the housemates interacting with each other, kind of like a social experiment with fame-hungry contestants!
And the people that answer BB questions just saying how much they hate BB & think that people who watch BB are idiots are the pathetic ones. If they don't like Big Brother, no one is forcing them to answer questions about it! =)

Susie I agree with you. Every time I put a question out about Big Brother I always get a bunch of dimwits telling me to get a life. Why do they look in the Reality TV section if they are not interested? I'm not interested in certain sections on Yahoo so I just don't bother to look at them. I wouldn't dream of going to the Gardening section and telling people to get a life etc.
