I think it will be revealed that Snape has been helping Harry all along. It's Snape who challenges Harry, who prepares him, who tests him and lets him know where he's lacking by forcing him to fail and/or demonstrating to him his weaknesses. He's like the drill seargent that makes you hate him so you'll become a better soldier. Snape cannot be Harry's friend or even friendly toward him because then he could not objectively judge Harry's readiness to face each challenge and take the harsh steps needed to ready him to succeed. I think Harry's long-term mission is more important to Snape than Harry himself... and I expect we'll discover that he was asked by Harry's parents to do these things for Harry. Snape's job is to make sure Harry triumphs and survives... and yeah, Harry will live.

Snape is what the D&D'ers call "Lawful Evil."
He is committed to the Dark Side, but has a Life Debt, which he acknowledges in one of the Films. to Harry's father. His sense of honour is why he's usually the one to rescue Harry and why he is at odds with the other Evil Wizards.
There are also some hints in the films that he actually likes Harry.
Snape is definitely a major player and it will be interesting to see if Rowling redeems him in the Final Chapter.

Tough one. His character was purposely designed to leave you in doubt. Even when he is proven to be on the side of good.
That said, I'll go out on a limb and assume a twist to the plot and place Snape in the role of surprise bad guy with a bent toward resisting his destiny.

I think he is going to end up being bad. Everyone is counting on him being good and I think it would be a swell twist if he was evil. He is very gifted at occulmency so he could fool Dumbledore. I mean think about it, he is either fooling Dumbledore or he is fooling Voldemort, neither of these is a easy task. If he could fool one I reckon he could fool the other. Why else would he let Death Eaters in the school. Killing dumbledore at dumbledore's request is one thing but endangering all those students is another.

I think that Snape must be a good guy. Dumbledore trusted him, and there is no way that Snape could pull a fast one on Dumbledore. It also makes dramatic sense because he has been vilified throughout the entire series; he will probably save Harry's life or something.

he killed Dumbledore and made an unbreakable vow to the wife of one of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named's death eaters (Narcissa Malfoy)so I reckon he's a death eater.
