it works as a cigarette lighter, but anything I buy that has a car charger with it, it doesn't work.... I thought if it worked as a cigarette lighter, it would work as a charger? Am I just being dumb or is there a simple answer to this?

First of all, many cigarette lighters only function when the ignition is on - check that the cigarette lighter is actually functioning at the time you are trying to use the charger.
Other than that, the lighter socket is not the world's best contact - try to make sure you're really getting a good contact with the charger plug - try rotating the charger plug to see if some positions are better than others. Also, make sure it's definitely pushed in as far as it will go. If none of that works pop round to a garage and smile sweetly ;-)

There is no reason why it should work as a cigarette lighter but not supply current to anything else.
As has already been mentioned, are you trying to charge something while the engine is switched off? Some cars will disconnect power to the lighter entirely when the engine is not running for both safety reasons and as a way of preventing accidental discharge of the battery.

Cigar lighter plugs are a bit variable. Most of them have a centre pin contact, but the lighter bit has a larger ring contact. Some sockets have the centre all live, so it works, some don't. You perhaps need to look at the socket and your working lighter to see where the live bit is, and modify the 3rd party plugs to suit. Take care it's easy to pop the fuse.

Does the cigarette lighter work all the time, or are you just tryin it while the ignition is switched on? I dont see why it only works with the lighter plugged in since it it the same socket.

if it works as a lighter it has to work as a charger, some chargers are very stubborn to get in and need a bit of force and jiggling about, try again with a bit of determination.

Has the cigarette lighter fuse blown? I'd check that first it could be the cause of the problem.

GB answered that for you. Loose wire and also if the plug that you are using may not be good. Take it to the shop and have them look at it or to your nearby auto store, the auto store doesn't charge you for them to look at for you, the shop will.
