my boyfriend has a significant amount of trouble falling asleep and says that it often can take him up to two hours to fall asleep. in addition, he often has rather restless sleep which may or may not include fairly vivid dreams or waking up in the middle of the night. in addition, he says that sometimes when he even does get a full night's amount of sleep he will wake up still feeling tired. so, i was wondering what may be the cause of this inability and what if anything can be done to ease its affects (preferably through natural means, i.e. no prescriptions)?

Stimulus control.
Dont let your boyfriend go to bed unless he is really tired and want to sleep. This will make him associate bed with sleep.

Other means:
- warm milk
- no heavy meals before bed
- no exercise before bed
- no bright or noisy object in the room i.e. clock ....
- moderate amount of alcohol, but this increases wakefullness during the second half of the night
- he can practice meditation i.e. yoga .... practice it before bed

One in 3 adults suffer from insomnia so he is not alone. Some of the main causes are depression, anxiety, stress, medical conditions and diet. (caffeine, cigarettes and high sugar foods) He should go to sleep at the dame time every night. Even if hes not tires I suggest he turn off all the lights and try to lay down with his eyes closed. If he can't fall asleep within 20 minutes he needs to turn on the light and read a book or anything other than watching TV. Make sure he does not turn on any bright lights because that will just keep him up even longer. If this problem continues he may need to see a health provider. The doc will make sure that he doesn't have any sleep disorders. If he does the best bet is to go on Lunesta. It is a newer sleep med that is not as addictive as the rest of them. He may just need to take it for a week or two just to get back in the swing of things. Hope this helped!

I am a rough sleeper and there is nothing worse than waking up feeling tired. I suffer from chronic pain in my back and usually I will end up awake 4-6 times a night. I am not a pill pusher so I usually just try to ignore it. You might try giving him a massage before he goes to bed so that he can relax. Also it would not hurt to have him try to relax the best he can mentally because not getting good sleep is worse than no sleep at all

He'll have to get used to it, or sleep somewhere else. A friend of mine has parents who sleep in different beds, mainly because they keep each other awake with snoring. If they feel like sleeping in the same bed, they do, but for the most part they're in different rooms. I'm the same way too though. I would simply prefer to sleep alone. It's definitely nothing personal. Talk to him about it.

A good nights sleep, is associated with raised serotonin levels in the brain. Serotonin production, may be enhanced by consuming foods rich in the amino acid tryptophan, and supplementation of vitamin B-6. Some examples of tryptophan rich foods are turkey, cheddar cheese, non fat dry milk and warm milk.

Tryptophan is no longer available as a supplement. However, the precursor to serotonin, 5-hydroxytryptophan is readily available.

having these symptoms means that your bf is stressful in his work and life.my mom is like that too.it takes her close to 3 hours just turning around in bed getting a comfortable position.then even though she falls asleep ,her sleep is restless and she will wake up in the middle of the night.for water and toilet and even for food.when she does sleep a full night ,mom still wakes up tired.stress makes your brains works overtime.your body is tired but your mind is still working.mom won't take any sort of medication.she is now taking yoga classes and meditate.it helps her reduce her stress level and she sleeps better.
managing stress is about taking steps in relaxing your body and eating good healthy food.excercise especially running helps too.me and mom we do brisk walking 4 times a week...
try it and good luck = )

It appears he needs a sleep study done.
Since he moves a lot, he may have restless legs.
I have a sleep disorder and restless body syndrome.
Until I was put on medicine I was never rested.

Sounds to me like he needs some activity in his life, some parents have trouble getting their kids to sleep and have to wear them out first.
But since your boyfriend is older I'd say he needs to workout or take up running or even just keep busy to wear himself down so that he actually enjoys his sleep.
If you go to bed to well rested then yes it will be hard to sleep, stay asleep and have a peaceful nights sleep.
