im planning to go to planned parenthood to get birth control pills. my bf and i are using a condom and he pulls out everytime, but we wanted to get another form of contraception just in case. i am 17 and i am wondering what kinds of questions they ask you, if you have to get any exams, how much it would cost, if they tell your parents, etc. any information on getting the pill from planned parenthood would be helpful.

and please, no lecturing on abstinence or how bad premarital sex is. we are old enough to handle our own business and are being responsible enough to use birth control.

thanks=]

I went with a friend recently and since it was her first time there they asked her to fill out some medical forms first. I was there for moral support but I decided to fill some out too and the forms asked the usual new patient questions about allergies to medicines, how long had you been sexually active, and also your address. On the form where the address and general information is, there is a section were you can request to keep your records secret and no phone calls, mail to your house and so on. So no, your parents will not know if you don't want them to. The finance part of it asks how much you make and since your 17, I'm assuming you don't make an excessive amount so they will probably give you which ever birth control method you choose free. Anyways, when she finally saw the doctor, (the wait was long) they asked her questions about her sexual history, for example how many partners, how long had she been sexually active? Then they just asked her what type of birth control she would like to use. They had the depro vera (the shot), the pill, the diagphram...she chose the pill because you only have to go once a year (they give you a year's supply). They told her she didn't need any exams for now but maybe in a year a pap smear would be recommended and that was it. Well, I hope this helps!

If she missed a day or two, you can usually take the rest of the pills and catch up; however, a week is not something with which I'd gamble. She's better off just taking a pill a day and sticking to that daily schedule to get everything working the way it should. Birth control pills require daily adherence to the schedule to be effective. It's got to be part of the routine... every day at roughly the same time. If that doesn't work, there are plenty of alternatives - the patch, 3 month injections, etc. - that don't require as much daily effort. If I were you, I'd use condoms for the next month or two. Birth control pills generally take a month or two to really become effective in the first place. If the daily schedule isn't maintained, the body realizes it's fertile again and may take a while to convince that it's not.

Good on you for being responsible. I'm guessing you're in the USA? Over here in the Uk we don't have a physical exam and I'm pretty sure it'd be the same over there. They do ask alot of questions about your sex life though to make sure you're not under threat of STD's. We get the consultation free here and don't have to pay for the contraception either. If you want it kept secret they have to abide by your wishes.

Good for you in protecting yourselves and each other... Well, I really likes VCF (vaginal contraceptive film) you get a box of twelve and they are pretty cheap.. it's incerted into the vagina prior to intercourse and it dissolves.. There's no mess or clean up.. It also lasts 6-8 hours.. I really recommend them as a back up birth control method... On top of the pill and with a condom, I think you are all set... good luck and thanks for being resposible-spread the word... BTW your bf should be helping pay for some of this stuff too....

Kudos to you, for taking a responsible step.
The safest is using the pill (you) and condom (him).
When using a condom, it's also crucial that he pulls out before he gets too soft, so that there's no chance of the condom slipping off.

If you're "Old Enough to Handle your Own Business" then why does it matter if they tell your parents?
