Easter Sunday, 1985.

My 3 daughters were ages 6 years, 3 years and 6 months old. I had been diagnosed with cancer the previous December when I went in for my 6 week check-up after giving birth to my third daughter. In March of 1985, I had my first, in what turned out to be 14 operations. I had not been out of my room in almost 6 weeks and I was listed as critical after the surgery that took 13 hours. I had been depressed because I was in a pure white room with no fresh air and had not seen my girls in weeks. So that Sunday morning, before the sun came up, my husband drove 125 miles, to the hospital to see me. In the very wee hours, he got permission from the doctors and nurses and they lifted me out of my bed and put me in a wheel chair. He took me down to the second floor balcony of the hospital and gave me a cassette player with an R.E.O. Speedwagon cassette and as I listened to music and he read the paper, we watched the sun come up. It was cold and I was wrapped up in hospital blankets. That morning, as I watched the sun rise, I knew in my heart that I was going to make it, no matter what I had to endure.

To this day, whenever I hear an R.E.O. Speedwagon song, it takes me back to that cold morning, watching the sun rise with my husband and all the love I knew he had for me. It was the turning point for me in my battle. I sat and cried that morning but I knew I was going to be alright.

Next week, my husband and I will celebrate 26 years together and I have been cancer free for 18 years.
