Americans have adapted language removing the ae sound from many words to just an e therefore it's spelt Pedophile and pronounced as such. As for Brits well they are just silly then. It's quite funny how the latin works out in the word after the simplification. I wonder if other adapted words have also got strange latin meanings .

About three years ago, a suburb close to where I live was the site of some extremely stupid, "torch and pitchfork" vigilante violence, whipped up by The Sun and it's "Paedo's are everywhere" campaign. One of the victims was a Paediatrician..... (I am not joking, I believe she had bricks thrown at her house and car) The level of ignorance in this country scares me sometimes.

In the society that wants to use short or abbreviated versions of words this happens,people in too big a hurry to do anything.The results are letters dropped to make the words shorter..Orthopedics is another word spelled different
