Because they brought black music to a white audience, for starters. The idea of a Rock n' Roll Band in which four distinct personalities stood out was fairly unheard of in 1963.
They made the musician matter, not just the song. And they were crazy about the Blues, which mainstream whites in this country were wholly ignorant of. Other British
Bands crazy about the Blues and coverting into Rock And Roll?
The Animals
John Mayall
The Yardbirds
Jeff Beck
Cream
Eric Clapton
Jethro Tull
Led Zepplin...we take it for granted now, but the Beatles we're among the first to introduce the Blues back into our own whitebred culture. Paul is even or record (Beatles ist American Tour Video) for sayin'.."Y'know, what's great..it's this Black Music!." That didn't go over too well with the segregated society at the time. The long hair wasn't the only thing parents were afraid of..

"Twist and Shout"..a giant Beatles hit, was first recorded by The Isley Bros. years earlier..and got no attention on the pop charts.
"Tutti Frutti" (Little Richard) ignored by the mainstream when it was released..guess who had a #1 hit with it?...Pat Boone!
And then did I mention..the music..some songs are so universal in content..everyone can sing along, and it holds meaning on an international level..to the extent it can be called an "anthem"--
Let it Be
Hey Jude
Taxman
The Long and Winding Road
Yesterday
When I'm 64
We Can Work It Out
A Hard Days Night

are all this kind of song. If you're a young person, you can't like or dislike the Beatles compared to any other band. They are incomparable. And what they did for Western culture can't be imitated, though many have tried. If you've clocked a half a century, you get it, because you remember what crap we had for music before they came along and taught us about our own music, and kicked down that racial barrier at a time that blacks couldn't even vote in the south, much less get their records played on the radio.
Keep listening and you'll get it. It will never be "uncool" to appreciate their music...don't know where to start? The White Album..I hope this helps answer your question. So where's my points?! Give Peace a Chance..oh, that's another anthem...Ciao!@Best Band Ever.com

Because of their particular style for playing music as well. I've heard some of the other British groups that came out about the same time but the way that the instrumentation was put together for their songs like in the song "Eleanor Rigby" and "Hey Jude" (my favorite song of all time by them) is just outstanding.

My mom said she saw something on PBS (they may air it again soon) called John Lennon's Jukebox and she said that they interviewed several artists that John Lennon went to learn more about their style of music so that some of it could be implemented. One of the artists interviewed was an artist by the name of Delbert McClintock who does a lot of work with the harmonica in addition to singing.

They also went to learn some of the music style from a gentleman from India by the name of Ravi Shankar (sp?) the father of vocalist Norah Jones (yep, I was surprised when I read that a while back in an article) among others.

I often wondered that myself. I am 52 and was therefore around 7-8 years old when The Beatles first became popular. I have always seen them as talented songwriters but very average performers just as The Spice Girls are very average performers

They were producing consistently-good songs, which covered a wide range of styles (they didn't stick to any one particular style) and were, on the whole, better than what many other artists were producing at the time; were good crowd entertainers as well as good singers (even at times when in private they were at each others' throats); and because so many of their songs have withstood the tests of time and will probably still be getting played in another 40 years' time.

I am with you, I have never understood Beatle-mania.
If Elvis hadn't had never generated interest in the 50's, the Beatles would not have been as popular in the 60's
