I'm in the same boat as you! hehehe. I just bought a 12' boat that needs work. I believe any primer will work fine just as long as u use marine paint ontop of it. I was just at lowe's and they had a nice selection of cheap primers. Where did u get your marine paint? I'm having a heck of a time finding some.
I found this at the lowe's website. i searched for exterior primer.

Unless you are wnting to paint your boat camaflouge for hunting purposes there is really no reason to paint an aluminum boat. The aluminum oxide actually works very well to prevent furthere oxidation from occuring on an aluminum boat. However if you do want to clean it off one prson recommended muriatic acid, which is a diluted hydrochloric acid solution. Personally I would suggest hydroflouric acid to clean aluminum immediately followed by a good etching primer. Aluminum oxidizes very rapidly which is also part of the reason that it is difficult to weld.

Use Zinc Chromate Primer, It etches the aluminum to provide a good paint bond.

"Any" primer will not work on bare aluminum. You need to use aluminum or galvanized steel primer. You can skimp on the quality of paint. Most painters would also recommend that you clean/etch before priming although some (more costly) primers will etch and prime. Check this site: www.best-price.com

if you want paint to stick to an aluminum boat with oxidation(dull color) the best way to prep it is with muriatic acid. go to a hardware store and buy a gallon or so and mix(dilute) approx 1/4 muriatic acid to water. apply liberally to the aluminum allow to work (soak) for approx ten mins. then rinse well and repeat. do a final rinse and let completly dry, then a quality underwaterline(for constant underwater use) or waterproof paint for above waterline. I have used this method for years and works best that I have found.(sure sticks camo to my duck boat even when breaking ice!). muriatic acid is relatively weak and safe to use, of course proper eye and rubber gloves and other safety measures need to be observed. I do my (washing) in the gravel area of the shop and dilute with water afterward and have never had problems ps it can kill grass if to much gets on it but not always though. cement is ok(this is used as a driveway cleaner too) as loong as you dilute after with plenty of h20!

I would say use the best primer available, and a cheaper paint.
