No - it is not important - but it gives you a sense of accomplishment. Voting as the best answer is NOT necessarily the way to get it either.
Here is how it works:
**************************
Top Contributor is a member of the Answers community who has shown that they are knowledgeable in a particular category. Each Answers user can be a top contributor in up to three categories.
The top contributor badge is dynamic, you earn it or lose it depending on your recent participation in a particular category. The more actively you contribute, the more likely you will earn a badge
**************************
I guess the operative word here is "dynamic". It means everyone with TC badge, even me - can lose it if I do not maintain answering.
Hope this helps

I wasn't shooting for it, especially in the Singles and Dating. In fact I think most of their questions are silly. However, looking back I realized I had answered and voted for a lot of those categories. I like having the wedding one, bc some ppl in there will take you more seriously with it. But if I lost it oh well, I like gaining levels, it is more in your control. I do answer questions others won't but never with an "I don't know." I have to seriously have a good answer for them. I just hate to see people without any answer.

i don't think it's important at all.... as u pointed out - the whole system is flawed anyway, and the 'top contributor' thing does not mean to say that u are giving good answers. maybe the 'top contributor' thing should go to those people who get the most stars & thumbs up ?

It's a complete mystery. The Y!AT says it's a "secret", but even they don't know how it works.
I think the original idea was to encourage more quality answers, to impress the advertisers and sell more space, but it seems to have mis-fired.
edit: I see you have discovered the secret of how many people have gotten in the top levels of the leaderboard.

Dear, you've asked this question a few times now, but anyway, my answer is still the same.
No, it doesn't matter, but it doesn't hurt to feel some sort of self-satisfaction. ^_^
