I'm into quality, not quantity, but here are my favorites:
1. Ebisu. The best of the best in San Francisco, at 9th and Irving in the Inner Sunset. http://www.gayot.com/restaurantpages/SanFranciscoBayAreaInfo.php?tag=SFRES00119&code=SF
2. Sanraku Four Seasons at Sutter and Taylor. Always packed because of their unusual offerings and terrific varieties of sake.
3. Bristol Farms Market - Westfield Center. Yes, you read that right! I always hold out for authenticity, but the sushi counter in this delightful gourmet market is subcontracted out to excellent professional sushi chefs, and it's terrific. They have all the traditional favorites, plus I love their rolls made with avocado and dungeness crab tempura.

The best sushi in San Francisco is Zushi Puzzle on Lombard/Buchannon. Sit at the bar and let the chef suggest what to order. The fish is fresh and prepared with expertise.

Go to Japantown, they have the best and most oringial (cus theyre Japanese, haha). Or go to a buffet like Todai Seafood Buffet in Daly City they have a lot of sushi too. Or Kiki's is a good sushi resturant. I can't think of anymore, they all taste the same to me, I'm not really a big fan of sushi

Wow too many American choices here. The only sushi house worthy for Japanese is "Sushi Maru". The test is in the egg sushi and of course if they serve crab claw miso soup!

sushi is hard in san francisco. it's strange, but it's true. i personally wouldn't go anywhere in j-town for sushi, but that's a matter of opinion.
the first five are easy (and fortunately for me, that's all you wanted):
1. minako (fresh, organic, on mission between 17th and 18th)
2. ebisu (in the sunset on 9th between lincoln and irving)
3. sushi ran (they have very good food, but they're actually up in sausalito and they're pretty pricey)
4. hamano (on castro between 24th and 25th in noe valley)
5. yum yum fish (in the sunset on irving at 23rd... they're very hole-in-the-wall-ish, but if you can catch them on the day of or the day after their fresh fish delivery, they're delicious)
have fun! (this post has made me incredibly hungry.)

I can tell you where NOT to go. Not Sushi Mambo in Napa. The service was horrible, and I never did get my sushi.
