Carving can be difficult, and is hazzardous. Be careful not to cut yourself. You can use a very sharp knife (should be honed and fairly flat across the blade. to cut down a block of wood, after cutting out the general shape. Cut out a flat heart shape, (with a coping saw, scroll saw or jigsaw) then slowly round the edges until you get the right shape. If the heart is fairly small, leave a handle on it until the end to make it easier to handle. This can also be done with a rasp if you aren't comfortable using a very sharp knife and are useing a softer wood like pine or aspen.. Wood that is a bit green will be easier to cut as well.

My husband actually gave me a stone, heart-shaped box when we first got together as a mean joke because he thinks I am so cold. I'm really not, I just don't want to deal with the excessive crap he deals out sometimes.
