I suppose poverty is a virtue because you appreciate the smaller things in life. You worry about where you're going to lay your head at night, and when's the next time you can get to eat.
And you don't worry about buying the next best thing out on the market, or the right clothes, or worrying about what people think of you.

Virtue is defined as the moral excellence of a person. Poverty on the other hand is the material need, typically including the necessities of daily living (food, clothing, shelter, and health care). Poverty in this sense may be understood as a condition in which a person or community is deprived of, and or lacks the essentials for a minimum standard of well-being and life.
Poverty as a virtue? No. It isn't. The two go against each other. Although Poverty has an effect on a person's virtue as well as vice, it doesn't directly imply that it is indeed a virtue.

From my perspective it DEFINITELY is not! Poverty is like a disease when your in it the only type of people you attract are people who struggle like yourself. The upperclass don't feel you deserve to be treated with respect and the older you become the worse you are treated. You need money to survive. Nobody in their right mind chooses poverty. Poverty is more like a vice than a virtue.

No, although I think some people preached that in the 19th century. Poverty can be a choice, like for priests, or it can be something to be overcome, or it can be something you're born into, but it's not a virtue. Now, to live on less than you have, that could be virtuous.

I don't believe poverty is a virtue; if a person is thoughtful and smart he will not get poor. I think not to care for money is a virtue, I mean the ability to donate it to those in need.

No it is not a virtue, it is a curse. It is made infinitely worse by trumped up snobs pathologising poor people. Poverty is not only about money. Poverty is lack of choices over relationships, travel, work, social standing, clothes, cars the list just goes on. Please oh please don't insult poor people by telling them to "fake it until they make it". Grrrrrrrrrrrr
Poor people must have (and generally do) ownership over their poverty .. unlike the high flying MBAs working at Enron I suppose.
