Yes & No, Mom taught me to celebrate June 19th because that's when blacks were freed from slavery. I bet a lot of people did'nt know that one. Here's a star!

Well, if you consider yourself American and enjoy independence and having the good fortune to live in a country where you are allowed so many freedoms, then by all means celebrate.
If however, you consider yourself an African stuck in America and you do not care for the freedoms given to you, then you should not celebrate. You shouldn't watch fireworks or even have a cookout. You should protest and not leave your house all day.
Most every group of people from every continent has been abused at one time or another by someone. History is filled with constant wars, conquering, and persecutions. You can't walk around forever being upset with the country because some people who are long gone did something bad to some other people that are long gone. Work on changing what's wrong with the world now rather than focusing on what was wrong in the past.

No. you are wrong. Juneteenth was made to celebrate the last of the slaves being freed in Texas. Most of the slaves were free at the time. The ones in Texas simply didnt get the memo. By not celebrating fourth of July you denying our ancestors involvement in the creation of this country. There are many blacks in this country who put thier lives on the line to make this country what it is today.

I don't even care about the fact that its independence day. I just care about getting to be off work and enjoy all the cookouts and fireworks.
by the way, I'm still american. Should you not celebrate it since you weren't alive then? ANY american should be able to celebrate independence day.

Well, my ancestors were not even IN this country yet, back then, yet I still celebrate... it's about celebrating America's hard-fought war for independence from England... not about where our ancestors were in 1776.
I'm assuming that you are 11 or under, as apparently you do not know what you are talking about...

I have to go with the first answerer. I'm just looking to eat good food, watch 'Transformers', enjoy the fireworks, and possibly get drunk. Possibly.

African Americans would not have ever become free if England had won the war.
