OK, yes, vocally Violetta is da bomb, but with her personality I just love Rosina. She just seems to have that spark of mischief that so many Rosinas can't pull off!

I'm really sorry to hear this. Her astonishing triptych of leading roles, the three Donizetti queens (Elizabeth I, Anne Boleyn & Mary, Queen of Scots) in Roberto Devereux, Anna Bolena and Maria Stuarda, were almost legendary even before they opened at the NY City Opera in the 70s, and her unbelievable courage not only to sing all three roles in a single season, but actually back to back in a single week on occasion -- she always admitted that this particular feat probably took several years off the longevity of her voice, but that she still wouldn't do any different even in hindsight -- caused her name to be writ large in world operatic history at a stroke. Thankfully, someone had the wit and foresight to record all three productions with (almost) the complete original casts just about immediately, and it's those I think of and cherish as her finest work of all. An extraordinary artist and a unique woman.

Dame Beverly was so great. The unlucky side was having so much of her repertoire in common with Sutherland.
I'd pick the Koenigin from Mozart's Zauberflote. Very few could follow her up there.

Oh how dreadful! I had no idea.
I think my favourite would have to be Zerbinetta, although Robert Devereux is certainly up there too.

How sad my morning is after reading this. She was a great and lovely person and artist. I will play all of her recordings this week.
