Ugh, been there. The fact of the matter is that you have to play the game until you're the boss. Otherwise, you won't get ahead. Then, once you're in charge, you will hopefully remember how you feel right now.
I am not saying that you have to give in to every little thing. Just pick your battles; it is usually wisest to smile, nod, and complain to your friends later than to fight then and regret it. Trust me...bad times.

The next time your landlady, etc tries to bully you hold your head up high and look her straight in the eye, and keep the eye contact. It will unnerve her greatly because bullies don't expect to be challenged, even by direct eye contact.
Not all people in positions of power abuse it, but those who do almost certainly have an inferiority complex and are actually rather insecure deep down.

I HAVE observed occasions- when weakness "attracts" abuse... That you've been something of a "lightning rod" lately- is probably more of a case of bad timing and oversensitivity, than your actually inviting hostile behavior! :) What you DO is, when someone is "venting" in your face, -tell them, "Well that's too bad! But I'm doing what I can...-& it's the BEST I can do...."- And turn around & walk away. That puts the "ball" in THEIR "Court"- and it become THEIR Problem (which it probably was- in the first place!). Your beliefs & ideals are EVERY BIT as significant as theirs- & if they don't like them- they can go & yell at someone ELSE- because YOU are not going to put up with it! :)

Ego is the reason they abuse it. However, if you are bumping heads with everyone in power you must consider that the problem is you. You might have an attitude and not even realize it. Talk to a friend and ask them to be honest with you, then ask them. I do think you have an attitude problem and perhaps don't know when to keep your mouth shut. I don't mean to be rude, I'm only trying to answer you and help you.

In a similar situation I looked the boss in the eye and calmly told him I wasn't his kid and wouldn't put up with being treated like one and if he continued I would walk away. For me it worked and I gained respect I never had before. Bullies are very insecure and can't handle having their faults exposed. This is a very powerful weapon but don't use it casually or you will pay for it.
