Personally, I like beryl. Not just because it has many interesting color varieties--emerald, aquamarine, heliodor, red beryl--but also because I mine it! In addition it has an attractive hexagonal crystal shape.

I love the opal. It's not flashy as a diamond (which are way over priced considering the number of diamonds there are in the world. A diamond cartel led by deBeers (s) controls the cartel and distribution to keep the price up). The opal has a certain luminance that is so pure, soft and warm. When set in a good ring setting it almost seems to glow with warmth. I think the opal is underrated as a gem.

I like alexandrite. It changes color depending on if it is is natural or incandescent light. It's rare and expensive though, unless you get a lab created one and what's the fun in that?
