If we all protest by refusing to purchase these vehicles it will force the automakers to change their ways. My 4 cylinder vehicle sits in the garage most of the time while I ride my bike. What about you?

Duty and concience are not enough. Just look at the answers, a lot of people just don't give a crap. And it has nothing to do with automakers. They make what customers buy.

The only thing that will help is heavy taxation of gasoline. Just like they do in Europe. I'd add another $10/gallon in taxes. Now, that would REALLY change ways! Would help with traffic and smog too. And people will still have their freedom to pollute at $100 a trip.

i do no longer own an SUV, yet i think of Gaia is in all probability greater saddened at her babies than offended. She is ever a forgiving mom. even if, she makes her sadness huge-unfold by her rains and heat and floods and earthquakes and fires, and all different way of climate and earth-appropriate mess ups. She has been attempting to let us know for some years that she is hurting, and we are in basic terms now placing out to pay attention her. I pray this is not too previous due, she is the only mom we've. Woe to the human race if we smash her.

Sorry, my Jeep Cherokee was a birthday gift & I love her.
She gets around 22-25 miles to the gallon. If you ride a bike in my city , you will get run over. Everywhere I go takes a highway with speeds from 55-70 mph - not bike friendly.
I recycle, try to combine trips, own a sailboat (no gas needed), & I try to be earth friendly but my SUV is my friend esp. when it snows.

Well I don't know about the mother earth gig or whatever but Pollution is bad and we know its bad and we should begin to change things soon. One thing that is good is that Chevrolet is coming out with a car called the Volt. This is a electric car and will begin to change things, also there is biofuels like biodiesel and ethanol and those fuels are not as polluting and they are organic basically and break down quickly if spilled unlike petroleum which can linger in the ditches or bay for years. So do your part.

No it's not.
It would take me 2 1/2 hours to ride a bike to work, and in Arizona's 115 degree weather it will never happen.

i dont even own a car. i use public transportation, my bike, and am going to buy a moped. it gets over 60 miles per gallon! if i ever need to try to transport large things theres this great service called zipcars where you can rent out a car for 7 bucks an hour or for the whole day for 56 bucks. that includes gas and insurance!
people just need to start being creative and realize that though you may not see an immediate effect of your actions, in the long run, it can be devistating. i like not having to drive, i get so much done on the train!

You know guys why human being made it this far? it is because there were always smart people who would come up with questions like this one. The other species are gone because they only thought in the way of "gogo america love vehicles crap".
Hey buddies enjoy your engines and smoke.. celebrate your "freedom" because when we start having a Katrina every week... you will be hiding and crying.

Even if everyone on this forum decided to do that, it wouldn't make a difference whatsoever. There are a multitude of suburban housewives that don't give a damn about the environment who would rather spend $80 to fill up their tank than dream of riding a bicycle.
It's a nice thought, but it'll never happen.

I have never owned an SUV...but when the leaders crying about the environment and the effects of SUVs get rid of theirs, I might begin to take them seriously.

grow up. It is a right to purchase whatever vehicle you wish. I you want to run around in a hybrid, feel free. I like the safety rating of my SUV, and since it is my money i put in the tank, who are you to legislate what i drive. I love liberals who worship "mother earth" but deny the existance of Father God. Protest all you wish, money talks sweetheart.
