Black High School Students in Louisiana Threatened With Lynching
By Rick Perlstein
TomPaine

In September 2006, a group of African American high school students in Jena, Louisiana, asked the school for permission to sit beneath a "whites only" shade tree. There was an unwritten rule that blacks couldn't sit beneath the tree. The school said they didn't care where students sat. The next day, students arrived at school to see three nooses (in school colors) hanging from the tree....

The boys who hung the nooses were suspended from school for a few days. The school administration chalked it up as a harmless prank, but Jena's black population didn't take it so lightly. Fights and unrest started breaking out at school. The District Attorney, Reed Walters, was called in to directly address black students at the school and told them all he could "end their life with a stroke of the pen."

Black students were assaulted at white parties. A white man drew a loaded rifle on three black teens at a local convenience store. (They wrestled it from him and ran away.) Someone tried to burn down the school, and on December 4th, a fight broke out that led to six black students being charged with attempted murder. To his word, the D.A. pushed for maximum charges, which carry sentences of eighty years.

I've heard of the problems at Jena, but wondering what your source of information is. I have not heard that detail before. Can you provide a reference so I can read about it?

I did hear about the nooses in the tree, but I didn't hear about the black students being assaulted at white parties ... one wonders why they would go to the party, given the unrest. As for the fight, the news media said that the 6 black students attacked the white student, and almost killed him. If you could send a link to the real story, I would really appreciate it.

There is all sorts of racism in this country and in some instances it is reverse racism. You talk about black students being assaulted by whites but what about when the opposite happens? Is it ever okay to assault somebody just because of the color of their skin? In this article you state that the even after the white students where punished by suspension riots were started in the school by the black students ,and even though I can understand their anger, wouldn't it have been better for the students and their parents to go before the school board to get things changed instead of causing the problems that have followed. You make it seem that racism is just a white thing but it is an all races thing propagated by groups such as the Klan, Nation of Islam, NAACP and any other single race leaning group. What we need to do is have dialogue between the races so that we can better understand each other and let go of the hurts that have been done to us because as long as we hang on to them like a crutch nothing will ever be resolved or made better.

Yeah, of course it still happens. Especially in a place like Jena, Louisiana. I adore Louisiana, but Jena itself is quite a backwoods, extremely conservative town. I am not suprised that a story like this comes out of it.
Basically, little towns like this are just behind the times. I've noticed that with technology and innovation, people are becoming more and more the same, and racism is hard thing to really find in the bigger cities.
I go to college in a town about an hour away from Jena, Louisiana. Honestly, I find more reverse-racism (blacks hating whites) than I do whites hating blacks.
It's not going to end for a while, especially in the south.

Well, it's still a problem.
In high school, you can feel it the minute you take a look around.
There are groups of black, Latino, white, Asian, Middle Eastern people and more.
If one is not from one of those races and tries to stay where that certain group is something bad might happen.
The person might probably get beat up.
But this is only a tiny example compared to the problems there are in jobs, hospitals, places in all.
And there are even more serious problems about racism in the world like the other guy said.

Yes there is still racism in here. Maybe it is not everywhere you go, but that doesn't mean it's not there.

I think that that's just horrible.
And, I'm not trying to offend anyone when I say this and it's just my opinion, but I see alot more news stories about racial intolerance from white people then from any other race.
I always hear and see stories about white people discriminating against other racial groups, but I rarely ever see stories about racial intolerance towards white people.
I don't really have room to complain, because I don't have to deal with the problems of racism as much as others may have to, but I still do have to deal with it.
I've had students of my own and other races dislike me just because I am white, and I really don't understand it.
But it's the world we live in, and I'll do whatever I can to try and help it change.
But until everyone makes an effort to change for the better, this world will never change.

This really pisses me off.

I live in a small area in northern Wisconsin and there is a lot of problems with racism. Mainly because of ignorance and backwards thinking. I don't think this way and have inter racially dated you pay the price for it. But I don't care if more people start standing up for whats right I think things could really improve. I really don't get why some people think they have the right to try and harm another person. Espeically for their skin color. Honestly what is wrong with people?????

On the flip side to that coin, in Charlotte NC, forced busing to integrate schools was halted a few years back saying that the city of Charlotte was now sufficiently integrated itself enough so that neighbors could choose the closest, neighborhood school and the school would be integrated to the extent that it reflected the city's demographics.

BEING MIXED (black and white) I see racism on both sides. I don't live in the South so it is nothing like that. We will never be perfect, I am not a beauty pageant chick hoping for world peace that will never come. That is really sick though, and those white people probably go to church weekly, I guess in their heads Jesus was white, just born in Africa??

just because a white man drew a loaded rifle on 3 black guys doesnt mean it was directly pointed to them because they are black. it might mean they were the closest people in the store

Stop the violence. It's as simple as that! People know more or less whats right from wrong and they will be held accountable eventually in this life and the next.
