When it comes to transmissions 5 indicates the speed gear that it is in,5 speed manuals have been around for a long time but in todays technology most auto makers do have 5 speed automatics, aka double overdrive, the chevrolet corvette has a 6 speed auto transmission, you can also try researching Chiltons Transmission Manuals.

Generally speaking, only manual transmissions are advertised as a "five speed". Cars with automatic transmissions arew simply advertised as "automatic".

There are new model cars that have six speed automatics, Cadillac is one model I know of.

Manual transmissions are generally all five speeds and the fifth gear is the most efficient gear and gives you the best miles per gallon but you do not use fifth gear unless you are on a freeway. Around town you will likely only use four of the five "speeds" or gears.

An automatic transmission is control by computers these days and it will shift from gear to gear depending on your speed and even the position of the accelerator or gas pedal.

Good Luck!
