Let me start off by saying this is a real question, i'm not trying to make drama or anything of that matter. But more importantly trying to get some honest answers. I myself am a 21 year African American male, and I am very big on rock. I will admit I haven't always been, up until probably 16-17, when I started attending with what I'd describe as predominately an all white high school. Anyways i also like hip-hop naturally but its something about rock that makes me feel free and on another planet. But it seems like its forbidden for us black males. None of my friends can relate and make me feel like its wrong for me to like what i like. Which is neither here or there i'm still going to continue to be me, but i just wanted some others perspective on the matter. Thanks

You should feel free to listen to whatever kind of music you want to. You have to remember too, as someone has already mentioned, that early rock music was shaped by African American musicians such as Chuck Berry, Little Richard, and after them Phil Lynott and Jimi Hendrix, the latter of which is regarded as one of the greatest guitar players the world has ever seen. It simply has happened that over the years music became more clearly defined as much of rock and roll became separated from its blues roots, and other genres developed, one of the last being rap/hip-hop, which, because it was and is made predominantly by Blacks, is usually associated with young Black men. I myself am glad to see stereotypes and the norms being defied, which is I feel rock and roll is supposed to be about. Rock on, and long live rock n' roll!

Thats a good question. I myself am a Three Days Grace and Breaking Benjamin fan, but some black people (not saying your friends are...) are ignorant and think all black people should dress in a certin way, and eat certin foods, and like certin music. They cant help it, there ignorant (agian im not saying all black people) So when you don't like there kind of music or like somthing different they think your weird and (in my cases ive experienced) think your not black enough. Its just one of those things. i would could continue on with this answer but I KNOW i would go off subject, however if u ask somthin from off of what i said (if u think long enough youll know) then i will have a much more longer/ better detailed answer than this. I'm glad your not gonna lwt what they say change your taste though, thats great.

That's too bad that your friends make you feel like it's wrong to like rock, because it certainly isn't. I think the music scene today is pretty racist and stereotyped, to be honest. Anyone can listen to any kind of music, regardless of personality, gender, race, or anything. It's almost said that this question even had to be asked, not bashing you asking or course, because it shouldn't be a big deal to people what race they are and what kind of music they like.

I think it's cool that you like rock even though your friends make you feel like it's wrong. It's sad that music is racist, but until all races like all kinds of music, I'm afraid that it might stay that way for quite some time.

I wouldn't say it's "forbidden" for black males. Nothing wrong with black males wanting to rock. A prime example would be Living Colour, their an all black hard rock band and happen to be damn good. Vernon Reid is one of the best hard rock guitarists around but prob doesn't get his due because he his black.

If anybody say that rock and meatal is forbidden for blacks, tell them to check out Sevendust, God Forbid, Wicked Wisdom with Jada Pinkett Smith doing vocals, Living Colour. These are all great bands that have members in it that are black and they rock out as hard as any other rock band.

im in the same boat and its sad how closed minded alot of black people are to rock music when black people created rock music. best thing to do is do you if they wanna act like they so bad cause they listen to rap bring up the fact that theyd be hard pressed to find a song on the rap radio stations that dont contain the word ballin' or diamonds or pimpin' or hustlin'

I personally think it is nice to see a black male interested in music other than rap. I feel that black men has been stereotyped in such a way that they are only supossed to like rap music and they can not be viewed as having any other musical taste. My advice is just to like what you naturally like and screw everyone else.

A good question!
How do I feel? I wish there were more like you!
Forming bands and playing music - bass, guitar, and drums.
Not just talking over a backbeat, but kicking out the jams live!
It's not wrong for you to like what you like - you have taste!

well i cant help you with what other black guys think, but listen to what you want,a good song is a good song no matter what it is.i know its hard because everyone thinks we need to identify with certain types of music or clothes or sport according to our color, nationality or race.do what you want and be who you are,not what other people think you should be.the guys in living color are all black, the lead singer from sevendust is black,so so what.i was in harvey, illinois today and i saw a 60 something black guy in a pink floyd shirt.go figure?
