the 1st and only other earthquake i ever felt was the big one(8.0) here in the bay area(san francisco area) in california

scared me half to death since i was only 6 at the time and i didnt even know the word earthquake until that one arrived.

i dont know if its some mental block or mind over matter but i dont feel them.

today i guess we had one around a 4.0 and the guys next door ran over to see if i was okay and i was like....dude you trippin.

so what gives? mental block? mind over matter? or do i just happen to be right place at the right time to avoid them?

It could be just the common reason, that they occur in California on occassion and you could be immuned to it. It would be like if I lived in a different country and say our main animal was an owl, hypothetically. Well, someone who was not used to hearing an owl, would freak out and say WHAT IS THAT NOISE. I would say, what noise? I lived in the place so long that the sound of the owl never bothered me, but someone newer to my country would question it.

Slight earthquakes are not felt because there is enough background action going on that you don't sense something unusual. A minor earthquake may appear like the response from a heavily-loaded truck rumbling by, and if trucks rumble by, why should you surmise there is an earthquake instead of a truck? PS. The '89 quake was a 7.0 event; the 1906 quake was up there around 8.0.

If you're distracted by something or moving around, it's harder to feel them.
