The country was actually hijacked in the first place by the founding fathers themselves.
They concentrated the power in their hands and fashioned a system where they, and their descendants could retain it.
It was hijacked again by those who had amassed large fortunes after the civil war.
They were the founders of the republican party. They have had control pretty steadily since Abraham Lincoln.
Institutions established by them, have served their creators very well and flourish to this day.
You may make a case that when Clinton was elected in 2000, this was a true case of the government being hijacked, temporarily at least.

1913! This was when the international bankers took control of our money and through it our country. This was a setup for funding at interest the first big war which they were responsible for starting. Start a world war, fund both sides at outrageous interest and the worlds people loose, however the bankers gain tremendously not only through gained interest but in the supplying of arms to both sides through their various corporations. They did the same thing again for the second war and now yet again for our current conflicts. They are the only ones who ever win!

Ronald Reagan disappeared for three days prior to announcing who his VP would be. Bush Sr was not on his list when he left.
He was told that Bush Sr would indeed be his VP during those three days.
Ever since:
Rich get richer and the poor get poorer. Widening gap between the two.
Arms escalation previously unthought of.
National debt starts to spiral out of control as the central bankers eagerly loan money to the government to work on their pet projects.
Centuries in the making. They are so close but yet so far. That damned internet is raining on their parade. A hard one to put the hush-hush on. So far.
It will take another 'dramatic event.' And Giuliano in the VPs office.

In 2000 when Florida was not allowed to accurately count their votes. The worse parts of what was done never made the national news. As you know this resulted in the Supreme Court appointing Bush. The second election was teeming with election fraud also. Florida's new Republican governor got rid of the voting machines used to "elect" Bush the second time.
