In addition to a firewall you must have full time (active) virus protection and full time spyware protection.

All the following programs are free.
---------------------------------------------
Full Time (Active) Virus Protection
If you do not have active virus protection, install only one. All are excellent.
Try AVG first.

AVG Antivirus 7.5 Free Edition

or
Free antivirus - avast! 4 Home Edition

or
AOL Active Virus Shield (powered by Kaspersky)

---------------------------------------------------------
Full Time (Active) Spyware Protection

or
AOL Automatic Protection Against Spyware and Malware

---------------------------------------------------------
Install the following five programs and run weekly or at least monthly. You need all five. They will greatly increase your protection. They are not a substitute for full time spyware and virus protection.

Ad-Aware SE Personal (update + full scan)

Spybot Search & Destroy (update + immunize + scan)

AVG Free, or recently I just switched to PC Tools Antivirus. Both programs work great, and provide email protection, free automatic updates, and run automatically in the background and scan all incoming files and downloads. Plus neither program requires the amount of space, and uses as much memory as does Mcafee or Norton.

I haven't had any virus protection problems since I quit using McAfee 3 years ago. So therefore I believe that McAfee and Norton both play a roll in virus making just to get users to have to pay more money every year to update their virus software.

Sorry but there is no free best anti virus. Be glad AVG wouldn't install on your machine. It sux. It's well known for letting Trojans walk right in. If you can't afford it right now you can still get the free 30 day trial of Kaspersky. I've been told that if you can delete all traces of it when the 30 days runs out then you can reload it again for another 30 days. But you have to get it all off of your machine before trying to reload it again. Kaspersky is the best on the market. You will not find any better. I've had close to a year. No infections of any kind.

I like Active Virus Shield. A lot. Active Virus Shield is made by Kaspersky which is one of top-rated anti-virus vendors in the world. Best of all it's free.

In recent tests, the most popular free anti-virus, AVG, was only able to detect about 82% of a very large sample of viruses. On the other hand, Active Virus Shield was able to detect better than 99% in the same test.
Full test chart is here:
http://www.virus.gr/english/fullxml/default.asp?id=82&mnu=82

Active Virus Shield has excellent virus detection rates and is extremely light on using your computer resources. (6mb ram)

Active Virus Shield detects and removes spyware, also.

And it updates up to 15 times a DAY with new virus definitions, 7 days a week!

Good stuff, free for everyone from:
