Just why, why did they do such a thing? And on a side note, has a superhero ever been killed before?

Killing off superheroes is often a gimmick. Notably, Superman and Batman each had "Death Of ..." series, though as I recall, Batman was prettyl clearly not killed, while Superman was thought to be dead for quite awhile. Superman's "death" was a huge marketing win. Even my father bought two copies of the entire series (one to read, one to save), and he got us a subscription to all four titles making up the story well past the return.
I wouldn't be surprised to see Cap back eventually.

One simple answer - 'killing' superheroes sells comics. They stumbled on this back in the early 80's when they killed off Phoenix of 'X-Men'... it was a great story, sad ending, and a huge success. Slowly but surely since then, it seems like everyone gets a chance to die and come back one way or another. Give me a break. Cap follows in the storied tradition of Phoenix, Superman, Supergirl, Flash, Robin, and many others. Heck, they actually let readers call in to vote on whether Robin would live or not.

I'll lay out $100 that Captain America will be back in one form or another within a year.

Because it was meant to be some sort of a political statement that was against the governenment and its current policies since the 9-11 attacks. I don't know why they had to kill him, Captain America was like my favorite hero. Yea plenty of superhero's have beene killed off but they somehow always return somewhere down the line. So Ol' Stars and Stripes will be back, but probably not for awhile though....

Superman died -- I think in 1992. He was killed by a creature (monster) under the Earth called Doomsday. They killed Capt. America as a metaphor for the current state of affairs in the USA. That's my belief.

read infinite crisis. like 50 heroes die. lots of them die in DC. idk about Marvel. but yeah it's usually to bring up sales. but please note, many heroes have died and have been resurrected in various ways(magic, not really being dead, etc.) captain America died like twice before and was still ticking during Civil War. so don't worry he'll be back.
