I would goto Kingsnake.com and find a breeder that has captive breed turtles. All these people that say go to a pet store have never worked in on i guess. It is generally a bunch of kids who know nothing about these pets that they hire to take care of them. With the poor care they receive and the bulk numbers in small aquariums it makes them more susceptible to disease.

I got my turtle from my step sister, she got it from a breeder in South Carolina. Maybe look in your local phone book for local breeders or sellers, that's safer than buying online.

As for supplies, I love Drs. Foster & Smith.

I have a 40 gallon breeder tank for my RES and I use a Zoo Med External 501 Turtle-specific filter for it. I tried the Fluval but like the Zoo Med MUCH better, it does a better job and the media lasts longer. It depends how big your turtle is how big of a tank you need though which will help determine filter size.

Check out Vickey Haecky's website for TONS of turtle info and advice/tips!!!

Good luck!

if you know about painted turtles then you will understand my user name "cpicta". I studied them as a graduate student. Western painted turtles have the fanciest plastrons!!! Sorry I don't know about web sites, I just wanted to say hi. (Oh yeah, I have 2 midland painted turtles and one...oh what the heck is it called...Shy...Trachemys scripta who would have been killed otherwise, since she's an invasive species)
Good Luck, keep the turtles well!

I personally wouldn't purchase them online....You don't realize what the turtles go through...go to a store that specializes in reptiles would be my advice.

AND I DID WORK IN A PET STORE THAT WAS REPTILES ONLY, SO THERE NOT ALL THAT BAD...THINK B4 YOU SPEAK NEXT TIME
