Install driver first, shutdown, plug in the wireless card. Power ON PC. Windows will detect the card and activate it or guide you through the process of activating it.
Also in Wireless Network Connections Properties, under Wireless Networks tab, unclick the box "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings" so that you can use the card's software to configure it.

Does the card look like this?

If it said PCMCIA on the box it was made for a laptop and wont fit in your desktop.

If it said "PCI" then it should be straite forward. Open the computer up and stick it in a PCI slot. Might have to remove a metal filler.
