I am a nationaly ranked swimmer and have been to world wide meets at Olympic size pools.
A olympic size pool is 10 lanes wide( 25meters)
50 meters long. And the important thing about being a Olympic size pool is that it has to be 9 feet deep the whole way.

As was said before, FINA standards specify a 2-meter minimum. It will depend what pool you'll be swimming in and what it is used primarily for.
