They don't have to be the same brand.
Whether they have to be the same resolution depends on your video card(s) and whether you're duplicating or extending.
If you're duplicating, same thing displayed on each monitor, you need to use the same resolution on both. That doesn't necessarily mean the same size, but you have to use a resolution that both monitors can handle.
If you're extending, the desktop continues from one to the other, you don't need the same resolution. (Unless your video card(s) require the same resolution, but I haven't seen that.)

Nope just as long as your graphics card has dual output you are good to go. I have a 19" LCD monitor on my primary and a 25 year old color tv on my secondary as my dual display is a vga and composite RCA type video out..
Connect what ever type and size of monitor you want then use the display properties to configure how you want each display.

No - pretty much any size/type will do - however it is easier to look at two different monitors that are relatively the same size.

I am pretty sure not. you do have to have a video card (or cards that support that feature though. I am assuming you are not running a cad or spark station.
