Yes it is. it writes information to the disc by "burning" some dye with a laser, leaving a pattern of "pits" on the disc.

yes but make sure you know what type of disks it uses to write to i.e. DVD-R DVD+R RW DUAL LAYER DVD-RAM
BUT MOST NEWER ONES WILL WRITE TO ANYTHING INCLUDING CD-RW CD-R ETC
