I got a hunting knife from a guy who had used a grinding wheel to sharpen it. It's ruined. For practice I have been working on it on and off to try to restore the blade but it's pointless. Do some research on the right way to do it and you will be fine, but whatever you do please don't use a grinder! You wouldn't think this warning would not be necessary, but...

Too many questions here left unasked. What is the blade material? What equipment do you have to sharpen knives with? Do you have an experience sharpening knives? How sharp do you need it?
