i turn 16 next week, and my drivers ed teacher told me that i needed my social security card to get my license, and that i cant just give them my number(btw i live in illinois just in case the rules are diff in other states)..but i have NO idea where my card is, do u HAVE to have it when u go in to get ur license? or was he just tellin me that to be safe, n if u do..how long does it take to get a new one, or can the SS office give u like a temporary one to take in

Yes, you will need your SS card. Go to the nearest SS office and fill in an SS-5. You will receive your card in the male in about 7-10 days.
You will need a parent with you to provide proof of identity.
They will give you a letter stating that you have requested a duplicate card. This letter will be proof when you apply for your license so you will not have to wait for the card.

If you live near a local social security office, you can get a replacement card the next day. Be sure to take at least two forms of identification with you, like a driver's license, ooopps you don't have one of those yet, lol, or maybe a birth certificate and something else.

Needing your birth certificate is the key words here. You need
that to get a social security card and a drivers license, and
don't forget a passport, even if you feel you may not travel,
you will. it's another form of ID with your picture, smile. :-})

The social security office can give you a new one with your old number on it. I don't know if you need it though. I hear tell Blogo is letting the illegal aliens get driver's licenses and they don't, or are not supposed to have, social security numbers. Good luck with your test.

There are a number of things you can use other than a SS Card to prove who you are to get a DL. Call the DL people and ask them for the list or paperwork they will accept.

it states right on the card for ss an tax purposes not for identification so why do you need to show as i.d. to get a drivers lic
