My friend and I are having a debate. She says that since she just turned 18 and her mom is disabled, she is considered a dependant and should get 600+ dollars from social security each month. She says this is because she goes to high school full time and still lives with her mom. I thought, however, three things consituted a dependant:
1-Being under the age of 18
2-Being retired and living with a family member
3-Being disabled and living with a family member.

When she lays out her situation, it is:
-She lives with her mom, who is disabled
-She is 18
-She is fully capable of getting a job
-She goes to High School full time

So is she considered a depenant under her mother by social security?

Here's the answer straight from the SSA website:

- Children if they are unmarried and under age 18, under age 19 and a full-time elementary or secondary student

So, she's a dependent until she graduates or turns 19, whichever comes first.

The government states that you can retain dependent status up to the age of 24, as long as you are a full time student, and living with the person that claims you as a dependent.

Your friend however does not get $600/mo because her mother is disabled. The Social Security Administration may grant the mother a higher monthly payment, but it will not go directly to the daughter.

I have only seen SS payments paid directly to a dependent if the parent on SS dies.

She will get dependent benefits until she is 18 and graduates from HS.
My son received dependent benefits because I am disabled. He turned 18 in February and graduated in June. He received benefits until his graduation month. After that time, all benefits end. Doesn't matter if the child still lives with the parent, they are then considered an adult and no longer entitled to dependent benefits.

I would say once she reached 18 she is considered an adult and not a dependant of her mother.
