The fuel filter is located on the inner frame rail under your truck. You'll need a couple of open end wrenches, and if you prefer to keep the fuel mess to a minimum, change it while the tank is low on fuel and before proceeding, go to the fuel rail on the intake manifold (where the fuel injectors are) With the engine cold and the key off, take the cap off the schrader valve (looks like a big tire valve) and depress the valve stem to release the fuel pressure first. Watch your eyes, it comes out quick. Then go to the filter and remove and replace it. There is always an arrow on the filter showing the path of the fuel as it should go through the filter. arrow points towards front of truck. I like to take the old filter and wipe off the outlet side of the opening and hold the filter over a can, I then gently blow through the filter (backwards to its normal flow) to check for dirty contamination AND restriction. Gives a good indication of the fuel tank health.

good luck, and don't smoke :)

The fuel filter is located on the left inside of the frame rail approximately straight down from where the cab ends. The other thing is called a strainer and is located inside the tank on the bottom of the fuel sender unit and does not need to be replaced unless you have a problem with it being plugged which you shouldn't. I used to replace these when I had the tank off though as I have seen them plug, but only a couple of times.

Trucks 2003 and up the filter is in the tank and is only supposed to be changed if the fuel pump is to be replaced.Which if you ask me is rediculous because its still a filter and can still get clogged.A lot of manufactures still arent on top of there game when it comes to filter service. They recommend fuel filter changes at intervals that are rediculous. These long intervals can clogg the filter and cause the engine to run lean and also premature fuel pump failure to name a couple.

That fuel filter is in the tank and gets changed when pump fails.
