No kids. No car note. No debt. Just me! what is a comfortable living amount? I want to get a apartment just big enough for me and maybe someone else if he came along.

I would like to earn $100,000 a year that would be a nice amount. I would think you could live pretty well on 50-60K.
I make 50K plus rental income, profit sharing and bonuses and it seems about right for a single women with no car note and no kids.
You figure first you will need to save about a million to think about retirement so 10-15K per year for that plus your current living expenses and if you ever want a car or kids or home you will need to save for that and vacations.
It is important to earn more when you are single because you just have yourself to qualify to buy a house or start a business or anything else you want to do. If a married couple earns 50K each they can buy a much nicer home than a single that earns 50K.
In some cities you would need much more to live and save for retirement.
