Why do people call cigarettes squares? Who started it?

Although I've never heard the word 'square' used to mean cigarette, my guess would be that the term evolved from the square cigarette papers used to roll cigarettes. You'll find some information on a website called:

It all started by the way cigaretts are packed... And believe this or not Black people did not start that it really was the english who originated that saying during WW-I.............................

I never heard squares, I heard them called fags or Frajos(Mexican slang)

they come in a "square" BOX its not the ciggarette its like get me a pack of ciggarettes but plural get me a few squares or watever :)
