Your owners manual will probably indicate, "Yes". The reasons are as follows:
1. There is more "blow by" as the cylinders and rings wear and this means more unburned gasoline will end up in the oil.
2. There will be faster wear as the specifications fall off and there is more travel and harmonic vibration of internal engine parts and this means more suspended metals in the oil and this of course adds to more wear and tear and the cycle continues to deteriorate. You have to remember that the oil runs through a bypass valve when stone cold until the oil reaches operating temperature. This means unfiltered oil is running through the motor for a few minutes every time you start a cold engine.
3. The blow by from wear and tear adds more contaminates to the oil faster and you'll probably notice the oil turning darker sooner and that gasoline smell when you sniff the dipstick.
At temperatures consistantly above 50 degrees fahrenheit, you can use any grade oil like a 10W40 or 15W40 or 30W or 50W and have the increased benefit of more anti-wear additives. You might burn more of a heavier weight oil depending on driving habits and existing wear and tear. When I ran cross country I would run 20W50 and it slowed oil burn in a new VW. As long as you swithc back to the lighter oil before Winter hits, you'll be OK.
The benefits of synthetics is they pump easier in cold temp's and they protect better at high temp's.
Good Luck!

I don't know about changing your "earll" but you should change your "oil" to the manufactures specs no matter the year of your vehicle.
