On Hell's kitchen this evening during the food tasting competition, I saw Melissa working in the Kitchen with her hair not tied up or with no net. For some reason I thought this was a requirement when handling food?

depends on your state and local health codes, although in my kitchen her hair would be tied up and back or she'd go home for the day

I always thought so. I've noticed several people on this season of Hell's kitchen that need hair nets. It's the same with Top Chef. No one is wearing anything to cover their hair. In the second season of Hell's kitchen remember a patron found a hair in their food and it caused major problems in the kitchen, plus that dude that kept sweating in the food. Yuck!

Yes it is, in the state of Indiana anyway. Either have your hair short enough you don't have to wear one or tied up. If the hair is short enough that it doesn't cause problems such as a lot of lose hair, long hair then it's not required for them. The idea I get, "Mellissa" should have been wear a hair net and/or tied up.

I thought it was a requirement that food handlers also wear gloves when handling food that will not be cooked, but I found out that here where I live hamburger preparers at Carl's Jr.'s don't wear gloves. I won't eat there again. I think it all depends on the county or state laws.

Yeah I also noticed that! Her hair is very long and it was like right next to her hand when she was chopping food! She should have definitled tied her hair back!

It is in the real world, but since it's a TV show, I'm sure they bend the rules. I haven't ever seen a reality show about a restaurant that depicts restaurant work accurately.

melissa is gross anyway, but i still totally agree. no wonder chef and the diners found a couple of hairs in the food at times! jen always has it up, so good for her. but for the sanitation of the chefs and diners, put your hair up for god's sake, contestants!

I wondered about that, too. I thought the law was vers specific on it but this is a reality show.
