Leave the fish in the tank when you do water changes. The suggested amount is 25% each week, and you should use a gravel vacuum to remove any waste from the bottom, otherwise this still contributes to ammonia and nitrite in the tank (both toxic to fish) as it decomposes. There's no need to use distilled water - in fact this is bad for your fish as it has all the beneficial minerals like calcium and magnesium removed. Usually, tapwater is fine as long as you add a conditioner to remove chlorine/chloramine (which ever your water company uses). If there is some reason why your tapwater/well water isn't suitable, it's better to use bottled spring water as this still contains the minerals the fish need.

Remove about half using a siphon, dont take the fish out because they are usually very sensitive to stress, and depending on the fish it can kill them. A gravel vacuum is best for removing water, because it gets the waste off the bottom which can build up and offset the ph and cause disease or fungus

Get a small syphon, take about a gallon out. Leave the fish in the tank. You should never net a fish unless it is an emergency or you are moving them to a new home.

Assuming you are housing fresh water fish...try using a gravel vacuum. You can find these at most places that carry pet supplies for about ten dollars. It is typically suggested that you remove about 25% using this method, then replace the water with distilled water.
